With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life and legacy of Willie D. Crawford, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose quiet strength, unwavering love, and infectious laughter left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on August 31, 1936, in Troy, Alabama to the late Rose Aner and Will Lee Crawford, Willie’s life was rooted in resilience from the very beginning. After the untimely loss of his parents, he moved to Brooklyn, New York at just 15 years old, where he was lovingly raised by his Aunt Queen Esther Jones and Uncle Eugene Smith. There, he became a brother in heart to John C., Jewel, Jean Esther, and Ivene—forming lifelong bonds built on kinship
In 1954, Willie met Young Eva Robinson, a girl from the neighborhood. Willie was quickly smittened with her. In true Eva fashion, she made Willie work for her attention. He consistently followed her around trying to catch her eye, he caught it but she still played hard to get. Willie knew his hard work started to pay off once he found himself having dinner with Eva’s family. Eva finally gave in to Willie when he asked her father for her hand in marriage. The two were joined in matrimony on September 8th, 1956 at the First Church of God in Christ.
Willie was the heartbeat of his family—a man who delighted in fatherhood. From teaching his children to ride bikes, to early morning fishing trips, to Sunday outings at Coney Island and Jones Beach, he wove unforgettable memories into the fabric of their lives. Whether on the carousel in Prospect Park or at a family picnic with fried chicken and macaroni salad, his joy came from seeing his children smile.
A model of dedication and work ethic, Willie served as a Mechanical Engineer for Con Edison for 35 years—never missing a single day of work. His integrity and determination set an extraordinary example. When he retired in 1999, it was with the pride of a man who had given his all for those he loved.
Willie was a man of many talents and simple pleasures. A skilled hunter and fisherman, he provided in every sense of the word. He also had a love for Westerns, classic films like Old Yeller, and characters like John Wayne filled his leisure time. Few knew he also played the guitar, a hidden harmony to the life he lived so fully.
His laughter was rich and full-bodied, and it grew even heartier when he became a grandfather. His grandchildren brought him endless joy, and he embraced each of them with the same warmth and wonder he gave his own children—playing games, teaching them to ride bikes, and creating new memories in the parks of Brooklyn.
Upon moving to Raleigh, North Carolina in 2006. Willie and Eva became members of The Upper Room Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop Patrick L.Wooden
Willie D. Crawford is preceded in death by his beloved parents Rose Aner and Will Lee Crawford, his devoted aunt and uncle Queen Esther and Eugene Smith, his cousin-sisters Jewel and Jean Esther, and his cherished son Dwayne Crawford.
