Walter Elton Haynes passed away on May 13, 2025 at Wake Med in Cary after a season of illness.
He was born to Elton and Girlie Haynes on March 25, 1945, in Lexington, NC. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in Philosophy and a proud Vietnam Veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force. After attending Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary for a year, Walter began his life in ministry serving in numerous churches in North Carolina before founding the Gathering Church in Garner where he was the Pastor.
Walter was a loving and caring husband, friend, and devoted follower of Jesus - a relationship that compelled him to minister to people from all walks of life. He loved reading, discussing theology and politics, meeting new people, advocating for social justice issues, and participating in the life of the church. In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Eleanor Ruth Haynes.
He is survived by many friends and former congregants.
A celebration of his life will take place at Open Table United Methodist Church at 2PM, on Sunday May 25, 2025 with the Reverend Sarah Majors presiding. A reception sharing in light snacks and memories of Walter will happen prior to the memorial service at 1:30PM in the church parlor.
