Susan Alberta Kerr Johnson-Davis, formerly of Woodridge, New York, was born on February 11, 1929 in Kerr, North Carolina to Jim and Emma Kerr. She was the second oldest daughter of 15 children. At an early age, Susan, affectionately called, “Alberta, Bert, Suzy Q or MaDear” accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at Wards Chapel Baptist Church in Harrells, N.C. She attended Bland Elementary and Bland High School, where she excelled academically, graduating in 1946. With aspirations of becoming a teacher, Susan was accepted to attend Fayetteville State Teachers’ College in Fayetteville, N.C. However, after one semester at Fayetteville State, she married Theodore Johnson (deceased), and her dreams of becoming a teacher were placed on hold. She later married Louis B. Davis (deceased) of Woodridge, New York.
A strong, determined, and hardworking woman with a genuine heart of gold, Susan had high expectations of her children and worked tirelessly to provide for them. She would spend the next 65 plus years at Crystal Run School in Fallsburg, New York, and Sullivan County Laundry Associates, in Woodridge, N.Y., as well as providing services for the elderly in the area. She joined First Baptist Church of South Fallsburg, New York in the 1950’s and was active in almost every auxiliary, with her first love being, “A Doorkeeper for the Lord” as she greeted visitors, members and friends, with a smile a handshake and/or a hug, every Sunday. Additionally, she was involved in several organizations in the community including the NAACP, and all of the sporting and fine art events at Fallsburg Central High School where her children attended and where her daughter, Silvya and son, Jimmy later taught.
One of the last great matriarchs of Woodridge, Susan was well-loved. In fact, after relocating to Raleigh, N.C. to be closer to family, her Woodridge family and friends reached out to her almost daily. She loved them and they loved her. However, she soon became a part of the Raleigh community. She was a volunteer grandmother for several of the local elementary schools and joined Victory Tabernacle Church where she became an active member of the SALT Ministry. Additionally, she met and made many close life-long friends. She loved everything about Victory Tabernacle, especially Pastor Perkins, or as she would say, “That’s my Pastor.”
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Emma and Jim Kerr, 13 brothers and sisters (Roscoe, Frank, Gilbert, Stedman, Scott, Mack, Jimmy, John, Raymond, Charles, Gertrude, Jeanie, and Myra), her oldest son, Jimmy, her daughter-in law, Irma Torres Johnson (Joseph) and her son-in- law, recently departed Precel Deon Kirk (Silvya) whom she called, “Her Son.”
She leaves to mourn her home going, her children, Dr. Silvya A. Kirk, Midwest City, Oklahoma; Mrs. Fontaine Swinson, Goldsboro, North Carolina; Mr. Joe Johnson, Raleigh, North Carolina; Mr. Arthur Johnson (Beverly) Wilson, North Carolina; and Mrs. Beverly Davis-Coley of Raleigh, North Carolina. Additionally, she leaves to mourn her only surviving sibling; her sister, Ms. Margaret Kerr of Philadelphia, PA, a special niece, Mrs. Elsie Lyons of Panola, Alabama and a special sister-in law, Mrs. Doris Washington of Raleigh, N.C. She also leaves to mourn her much loved grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition, she leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members along with dear friends.
