Sarah was born in Richmond, Virginia but was raised in Fairmont, NC .  She attended Rosenwald High School in Fairmont and graduated with the Class of 1960.  Her classmates remember her as quiet and studious.  She was also a participant in the Debutante Ball and the Home Economics Club while at Rosenwald.  After graduation, she moved to Stamford, CT where she lived for many years.  Later on in life, she moved to Denmark, SC where she worked at Voorhees University for many years as Secretary in the Biology Department.  While working there, she continued her education at Denmark Technical College and Voorhees University.

In Denmark, Sarah attended and was a member of Rome Baptist Church.  After many years, she moved to Raleigh where she attended and became a member of Wake Chapel Church and was faithful until the end.  She was a member of the Lilacs Club at Wake Chapel.

Sarah loved to cook and bake for her neighbors, family, and friends.  She and her daughter, Beverly loved to travel.  They were able to visit many islands and some countries. Cruising was her favorite past time.  Every day she loved to watch her favorite soap, “The Young and the Restless.”  She would not accept any calls or talk to you while watching her soap.  Sarah loved her family and friends and was known to them as “Queen Mother.”  Sarah was given the nickname, “Cookie”, by her cousins and family.  She was loved by everyone that she met.  She was a loving mother and grandmother.  Sarah lived a joyful and happy life.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Beverly Thompson, Raleigh, NC, one special son, Michael Oliver of Swansea, SC, one special daughter, Sharon Pickens Marshall of Greer, SC, one grandson, Mark Thompson, Louisburg, NC, two brothers, Frank Walters (Martha) of St. Pauls, NC and Michael Walters of Fairmont, NC, one sister Sally Walters Crump (Horace), Raleigh, NC, two sisters- in-law, Ernestine Perdue, of Denmark, SC and Addie Gant of Bridgeport, CT, and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Deacon Willie James Thompson and two sons, Mark Steven and Gregory Bernard Thompson.
