Rev. Muriel Janet Lucas Dunn, daughter of the late Rev. Luther Lucas and the late Jessie Perdue Lucas, was born on September 14, 1934 in Wake County. She departed this life on June 14, 2024 at home under hospice care.
She attended Lucille Hunter Elementary School, Washington High School, and graduated from Ligon High School. In her early 20s she worked at Belks as the elevator operator, and at Burton’s as loss prevention. She went back to Belks later as a stock room attendant where she retired. She worked part time at NC Department of Revenue.
She attended Grace AME Zion, where she sang in the Junior and Senior All Girls Chorus. She later attended Wesleyan First Church of Deliverance under the leadership of Rev. Mabel Gary Phillpot (Sister Gary). She answered her call to ministry at age 25, and was ordained at Wesleyan in 1977. She served as the Junior Pastor at Wesleyan. Later, after the passing of Sister Gary, she became the Assistant Pastor. She also attended First Church of God under the leadership of Rev. Edward & Nancy Ford. Rev. Dunn was active in the choir and preached often. She served as an associate minister and Deaconess at First Baptist Church. She sang in the choir at all of the churches she attended, and often led solos. Rev. Dunn was known for two songs; Yes, Lord, Yes and The Love of God. Her melodious alto voice did not require a microphone. She was on the TV show, Spiritual Awakening, where she preached as well as sang.
In her early years, Rev. Dunn was dedicated to helping others. In her latter years, she held a new dedication in helping her daughter with her 5 children. She was a revered icon in her community, known to be a woman of God, and those that knew her strived to be the best they could be in her presence.
She will be dearly missed by family and friends and leaves a legacy behind with her love for God. She loved all of her grandchildren but Aliyah held a special place in her heart. She had a spiritual bond with her and referred to her as her “Little Lamb”.
She is survived by her only daughter, Laureen Dunn Aal-Anubia (Doctor) and five grandchildren, Y’Hoshua Aal-Anubia (Breanna), Tymetheuz Aal-Anubia, Maiah Aal-Anubia, Aliyah Aal-Anubia, and Elijah Aal-Anubia; six great-grandchildren, two sister-in laws, Mary Dunn of Louisburg,NC and Barbara D. Wells of Rocky Mount. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth L. Dunn; her two sisters, Ruby Lucas and Helen Solomon; and one brother, Samuel Lucas. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, Monday, July 1, 2024 at Lea Funeral Home Chapel, 2500 Poole Road, Raleigh NC.
Visitation: 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM, preceding the service in the chapel.
Interment: Carolina Biblical Gardens, Garner, NC.
