Nellie Greene

Nellie Manley Greene was born on February 23, 1929 to Henry Thomas Manley and Nannie Lee Manley. Nellie was raised in Northampton County, NC. She received a Master’s Degree in Library Science from the North Carolina College at Durham.

She was married to John W. Greene III, Ph.D, of Raleigh, NC.  John was Graduate Professor Emeritus, School of Education, Howard University, Washington, DC. They had two sons, William Greene and Michael Greene.

Nellie pursued her career as a librarian in the NC Public Schools, the Maryland Public Library, and for many years in the Wash., DC Public Schools at the Slater-Langston Elementary School. 

Inspired by her mother, Nellie was a talented seamstress. She enjoyed cooking, travel, caring for her pet dogs, and life at the beach in Surf City, North Carolina.

Nellie went to be with the Lord after a brief illness, on August 14th 2023. She was predeceased by her husband John who passed in 2003. She is survived by her sons William Greene and family of Silver Spring, Md., and Michael Greene of Aiken, SC, as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Graveside Service: 11:00 AM, Monday, August 28, 2023 at Hillcrest Cemetery, 1935 Garner Road, Raleigh.  In case of rain on Monday, please meet at Lea Funeral Home, 2500 Poole Road, Raleigh at 10:00AM.
