Mary Elizabeth Walton Myatt was born on March 23, 1929, in Wake County, Garner, N.C. to the late Hiram and Lucy Roland Walton and to their union, they had thirteen children.
On September 21, 2024, with her family at her bedside, she transitioned to her heavenly home. Her husband, Johnnie Haywood Myatt proceeded her in death; two sons’: baby Johnnie Jr., and Johnnie H. Myatt, III; sisters: Ava Ailene, Bertha Mae Williams, Halo Dean; brothers: Ralph Junior, William Herman, Wilbert Lee, Raymond, Eugene, James Lee, Willie Lee, Eddie Edward and Howard Walton.
Mary attended and graduated from Garner Consolidated High School and W.W. Holding Technical Institute (now Wake Technical College) for nursing assistant and later for Real Estate. She worked as a home health nurse for a few years before becoming a sales floor representative for W.T. Grant’s Store in downtown Raleigh, NC. This made her one of the first few African American to hold this job title in the Raleigh area.
Mary believed in her civic duties and for over twenty-five years she starting working as a poll worker, which ultimately led to her becoming Chief Judge for the Wake County Board of Elections. As a long-time Notary Public, she could continuously serve her community. Later, she worked for Wake County Public School System as a Teacher Assistant and retired as a Division Manager for Rose’s Discount Stores. But, after retiring, she continued to work part-time at the Garner Road YMCA because she loved helping children and others.
Growing up with her sister Bertha Mae, they learned how to sew and enjoyed making their own clothes. Mary’s favorite pastime was clothes shopping, solving word puzzles, and wearing her hats to church services.
Mary joined church at an early age, and became a member of Juniper Level Baptist Church, after being baptized, and remained a faithful member until her health prevented her from attending. She was a member of the church’s Senior Choir, Missionary Ministry and served as a member of the First Aid committee, servicing once as the president.
Mary met and married Johnnie Haywood Myatt of Wake County early in her life, and to their union were five children. She leaves memory and legacy to her children, Alice Myatt Henry (Cordell) of Roswell, GA, Dr. Deborah Myatt Crandall (Jacob) of Raleigh, NC, and Lucy Myatt Williams (Bobby) of Fuquay-Varina, NC; one daughter-in-law, Marie Myatt; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren and many, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
