It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mahendra Kumar Dev on June 17, 2026. Mahendra passed peacefully at home with his wife and children by his side holding his hands. His life was defined by an extraordinary work ethic, a love of adventure, and an insatiable curiosity about the world around him. Mahendra made tremendous personal sacrifices and worked tirelessly to provide a better life for his family. Everyone who knew him was touched by his generosity of spirit, kindness, and willingness to help others. He possessed a remarkable breadth of knowledge across myriad subjects, fueled by his lifelong curiosity and love of learning, which he generously shared with friends and family alike.

Mahendra was the eldest son of Vidya Rattan Dev and Sarla Bhirawan Gera and grew up alongside his six siblings. As the eldest son, he embraced the responsibility of supporting and guiding his younger siblings with dedication and love. After his marriage in 1965, he showed the same unwavering devotion to his wife, Usha, and to his children, Sanjeev and Alka.

In 1985, Mahendra took the courageous step of moving his family to the United States in pursuit of greater opportunities. Never one to shy away from a challenge, he earned his Registered Nurse (RN) certification while working full-time as a Health Care Technician. He went on to serve patients with compassion and dedication at John Umstead Hospital for 15 years.

Mahendra’s greatest passions were gardening and reading. He spent many of his days off visiting the library, making trips to Home Depot to buy plants, and tending to his garden. Together, Mahendra and Usha enjoyed adventures travelling (especially Blowing Rock in North Carolina) and creating strong ties with close friends. Together they built a beautiful dream home and garden. He was also deeply involved in the local community, teaching yoga and helping raise awareness and funds for Pratham and Ekal Vidyalaya, nonprofit organizations dedicated to providing educational opportunities for underprivileged children in India.

Mahendra’s indomitable spirit remained evident even after he faced physical challenges; he continued to be a font of wisdom, strength, and guidance for his family. Along with his wife and children, he cherished his two grandsons, Vijay and Sahil, and his granddaughter, Milan. He also shared a close and loving bond with his younger brother, Inderjit, while sharing his love generously throughout his entire extended family.

Mahendra is survived by his beloved wife, Usha; his son, Sanjeev (Leena); his daughter, Alka (David); his brothers, Inderjit (Madhu) and Ravi; his grandchildren Vijay, Sahil and Milan, his family in the US including nieces Monica (Anil) and Deepti (Ajay), and nephew Niraj (Sarah) and extended grandchildren including Diya, Aryan, Tarun, Laila and Kira; and many more cherished extended family members in India and around the world.

Mahendra will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His family and friends will forever treasure the beautiful memories, wisdom, and love he shared throughout his life. Funeral services for Mahendra will be limited to family.

A Celebration of Life with friends will be held at a later date.
