Helen Joyce Smalls

Helen Joyce Smalls, 72, of Bunn, North Carolina, passed November 16, 2018. 

Helen was born to Grady Redmond Crudup and Euralee Crudup on October 2, 1946, in Bunn, North Carolina.  She married Robert Smalls in 1968 and they lived together in White Plains, New York.  Together they raised two children.

She leaves as her legacy two children: Lakisha Smalls and Craig Smalls with his wife Kieza Smalls.  She also leaves to cherish her memory her sister Veldon Selph, sister in law Jean Crudup, nieces Angela Toney and Karen Selph, nephews Kevin Crudup, Eric Crudup and Cedric Crudup, great nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her father Grady Redmond Crudup, her mother Euralee Crudup and her brother Earl Crudup.

Helen’s family and friends remember her as a loving and self-motivated person. When she had a goal or if there was a task that needed to be handled, she was focused. Helen also had a special space in her heart for helping people with motherly council and guidance. She loved and courageously protected those she loved. Quite a few of us have heard many say, “Helen don’t play.” We all laugh and chuckle as we remember those moments. But that loving protection made so many of us feel comforted and secure during our time of need. These qualities made her special and cherished by many.

Helen was also passionate about affecting the most positive change in people. On August 22, 1970, Helen got baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and dedicated much of her time helping others to have a close relationship God. Helping people to learn that God’s name is Jehovah and that he had a wonderful hope for the future. This brought her much comfort and joy. She deeply felt that the suffering many experiences because of sickness and death will be eliminated by Jehovah soon. Those who knew her personally, could see her zeal and deep faith in such promises as she was battling her own health problems. As she rests in a deep sleep, she will be anxious to see all she encouraged and loved so dearly in the paradise after her resurrection. This was a hope she cherished so dearly and kept close to her heart.

The family would like to take this time to thank everyone for their loving support. Words can’t express how much your acts of loving kindness affected each and everyone of us. This loving circle of family and friends made a difficult situation a little easier to bear. Thank you again for everything.
