Estell Scott Estes was the middle child of the late Fletcher “Sam” Scott and Ethel Louise Moore Scott, born March 7, 1953. She attended Wake County Schools and graduated from Millbrook High School in 1971. She received her undergraduate degree in Recreational Therapy from North Carolina Central University in 1977 and later earned a Master’s Degree from North Carolina State University. In 2007, she continued her studies by taking courses at Shaw University Divinity School. Throughout her life, Estell relied on prayer as a source of comfort and strength.
In September 1977, Estell married the love of her life, Irmis M. Estes. They had two sons, Elliott and Eric, and raised them together until Irmis’s untimely death in 1992. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she generously gave herself to her family, church, co-workers and clients. At an early age, Estell was baptized at Pleasant Union Christian Church and remained a member after marriage. She formed Pleasant Union Christian Church’s Little Gospels Children Choir and Youth Forum.
Estell retired from Wake County Health and Human Services after years of dedicated service. After her retirement from Wake County, she continued her passion to serve. She worked for Single Women with Children and volunteered at numerous nursing homes and hospice organizations. Additionally, Estell founded the Sunshine Ladies Social Group, an outreach ministry for widows.
