Charles L. Hunter departed life on Thursday 27, 2021 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, New York. Charles, also affectionately known as "Catdaddy", son of the late Haywood and Margaret Hunter was born May 19, 1941, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He attended the public schools of Raleigh and graduated from Ligon Junior and Senior High School in 1959. He was graduate of both Cybick School of Design in New York City and North Carolina A&T State University.
Following graduating from A&T, Charles enlisted in the United States Army in April 1964 and served in the Vietnam War. His service for his country continued as he joined the U.S. Army Reserves where he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. Following active duty in Vietnam, Charles became a letter carrier for the United Stated Postal Service and shortly thereafter changed careers becoming a New York City Corrections Officer. In 1987, Charles was promoted to Captain in the NYC Department of Correction. Following 21 years of service, Charles retired as Captain in the Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward in New York City. In 2001, he retired as Staff Sergeant in the United States Army.
Since Charles wanted to stay active following his retirement from NYC Department of Correction, he became reinstated as a letter carrier in NYC. In 2007 he retired from the United States Postal Service after a total of 16 years of service.
Charles was a spiritual man involved in many church activities including the Unity Baptist Tabernacle Men's Choir. He enjoyed driving to West Point, NY with his family, spending time with his fellow Veterans at the VFW Post and participating in numerous community events as a Veteran of Foreign Wars, Mt. Vernon Peacekeeper and member of the American Legion.
Charles is survived by his wife Jennye Hunter of Mt. Vernon, NY; one son, Michael Hunter (Agnes) of White Plains, NY; three daughters, Landa Hunter-Leathers (Rodney) and DeShawn Hunter both of Mt. Vernon, NY, Dana Hunter of San Pedro, CA,; niece, Faye Wilson-Jackson (Ronald) of Oklahoma City, OK; eight grandchildren, Michael, Sydney, Justin, Hunter, Matthew, Gabrielle, Elijah, and Harper; cousins, Carlton Quiller (Scranton, PA), Harry King (West Palm, FL), JoAnn Douglas (Creedmore, NC), Gwendolyn Newsome, Tina Quiller, Wilma Sutton and Charles Hunter (Raleigh, NC) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
